  • Stay Near

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. Psalm 32:9 I met a remarkable horse I called Lovey recently. She was clearly trained to draw near and stay near when called. She looked me in the eye as she stood still, right beside me, waiting for my instruction. Her gentleness was profoundly strong. I stood with my forehead leaning on Lovey’s broad cheek for a long time, soaking in her strength and stillness. Somehow she strengthened and comforted me. Lovey had obviously trusted her trainer enough… Read More

  • Eyes Fixed on Jesus

-for my son …keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of our faith.  Hebrews 12:2 I realized something was different by the time he was eighteen months old. Look in my eyes, sweetie. My little one would look anywhere but into my eyes. Day after day, I implored him, gently taking his sweet face in my hands and turning it to mine. Look at Mommy. Listen to my words. Something was interfering in my child’s brain, and he could not keep his eyes fixed on mine or anyone else’s. My therapist instincts sounded the alarm. I’d seen this behavior before in patients with autism, and I didn’t want to admit I was seeing it in my child. I can do this. I… Read More

  • Silence I Can’t Hear You

He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. (Psalm 107:29-30).   Silence, you elusive friend; Doors are creaking, keyboards tapping, I can’t hear you.   Let me settle at the sunny table in the kitchen; Perhaps there I will find you for a few moments. No! Pans are banging, dishes clanging;  The annoying crinkle of plastic bags;  Hands searching for breakfast pastries.   Maybe in the corner of the living room, Here in this tiny dwelling, By the window; (Silence and sunshine please!)   Oh no! Not here. The whine of saws in the next room,  As builders make a wall, Or tear one down. The crash of planks outside, Dropped from the heights,  To the busy street below.   Where… Read More

  • How We Gain New Strength

He gives strength to the weary, and to the one who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary (Isaiah 40:29-31). Listen to Me in silence, you coastlands, And let the peoples gain new strength…(Isaiah 41:1). The Lord is aware we are downtrodden, battle-weary. He sees us marching through the fog of weariness, calloused fists gripping His promises, battered brows fierce with determination. Thus, He begins Isaiah 40 with comfort and kindness. Comfort, comfort My people, says your God. Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call… Read More

  • Lent for the Weary

@audreycfrank In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it (Isaiah 30:15). We so often fight against the rest God offers. Instead of repenting, resting in His sovereignty over our lives, quieting our souls and trusting God, we flee. And our pursuers flee swiftly after us. (See Isaiah 30:16-17.) The word for rest here is also used in Exodus 14:14, that famous moment when the Israelites crossed the sea on dry land, only to look behind them to see the Egyptians marching in pursuit with full strength. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still (Exodus 14:14). How ridiculous the wisdom of God seems in the face of our… Read More
