Slave Girl

Now as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit that enabled her to foretell the future by supernatural means. She brought her owners a great profit by fortune-telling. She followed behind Paul and us and kept crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” She continued to do this for many days. But Paul became greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out of her at once.
Acts 16:16-18
Slave Girl
by Audrey Frank
Girl on a dusty road
Following close
Shouting out the truth
Smarter than most.
Chained to the owners
Making their pay
Using you to get rich
Day after day.
Heading to the place of prayer
Doing your thing
Met up with a man
Who knew about a King.
Truth shook, you shouted out
All along the way
Couldn’t hold inside yourself
What you had to say.
Slave girl, slave girl
Supernatural
Press on, push through
The wall is gonna fall.
Suddenly, he turns around
And looks you in the eye
Says the Name, the mighty Name
And gives you back your life.
Servant girl, servant girl
No longer a slave
Liberated by the Name
By one who dared be brave.
Who might you free today
Reader of this rhyme,
If you dare to stop and see
The people of your time?
Can you listen past the shouting
See beyond the slave
Maybe their freedom
Is why you’ve met today?
Are you annoyed by their crying,
Is your patience wearing thin?
Can you hear the one worth saving
Underneath the din?
Speak the name of Jesus
Command the spirits leave
Slaves are shouting truth
Desperate to be free.
Lord, thank you for seeing us beyond our annoying behaviors and spiritual darkness. You deliver us. Fill me with divergent, bold love that sees every person every day like You do. Give me audacious courage to call people into liberating Light just like someone once did for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
