Practice Instead of Resolution

a house on a rock with the words practice instead of resolution

Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice —I will show you what he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep, and laid the foundation on bedrock. When a flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.

Luke 6:47-48

The word practice is so graceful. I quite prefer it over resolve. At this time of year, when everyone is talking about New Year’s Resolutions, I like to ask myself what I’m going to practice. Practice implies trying, and trying again. Keeping at it. Persevering, even when one day is missed. Pressing on, although a week of the flu knocks down your planned productivity. Practice promises improvement and learning. Learning about yourself, about what works, and what doesn’t.

Jesus said that practice is like building a solid foundation that can weather any storm.

I have heard that architects build sway into the strongest, tallest structure so they can flex with the pressures that burst against them in wind, rain, and flood. Grace must be what gives flexibility to a house built on practice.

What will you try this new year?

Kindness is a wonderful practice. Patience is another. Saying no might be a good exercise for some. Saying yes may be for another. Stillness, creativity, thinking before speaking… There are so many possibilities! Jesus Himself suggests putting His words into practice.

The Lord does not despise small beginnings, and just choosing one this year might be the place to begin.

In the end, a simple practice done diligently leads to transformation and stability.

Lord, I want to practice with You this year. Teach me, transform me, steady me. Amen.
